The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has concluded its investigation into the injuries sustained by an adult male during his arrest by Brandon Police Service (BPS) officers.

On May 28, 2023, BPS notified the IIU of the following incident. According to the notification, on May 27, 2023, at approximately 2:25 p.m., BPS officers were dispatched to a domestic disturbance call. After investigating the incident, officers conducted a compliance check of the residence under the authority of an existing court order. The two occupants became obstructive and were arrested. An adult male was unco-operative while police were handcuffing him. As officers escorted him from the residence, the male managed to break free and attempted to flee.

A use-of-force encounter ensued, during which the male sustained a broken tooth. He was taken to Brandon Regional Health Centre for medical clearance and then lodged in custody.

The affected person had charges pending before the court as a result of this incident, which have now been disposed of.
