The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is currently investigating the arrest of an adult female in Portage la Prairie.

On June 1, 2026, RCMP notified the IIU of an incident that occurred on May 30 at approximately 1:51am. According to the notification, a woman called RCMP on behalf of a homeowner to report that a youth was intoxicated and smashing items in her residence in the 700 block of Poplar Bay in Portage la Prairie.

Officers attended the scene and located the youth, who was subsequently arrested for mischief. While an officer was speaking with the homeowner, an adult female forcefully made her way into the residence by pushing the officer with her shoulder. The officer attempted to place the female under arrest. She resisted arrest, causing an officer to fall on top of her. The female continued to refuse to comply with demands.

Officers carried the female to a police vehicle, where she wrapped her legs around the rear tire of the vehicle and refused to stand or comply with demands. Officers and the female’s sister attempted verbal de-escalation without success.

Eventually, officers got the female inside the police vehicle, and she was transported to cells. In cells, the female noted a dislocated shoulder and explained that it was the result of a childhood injury. RCMP officers called emergency medical services and she was transported to Portage District General Hospital, where it was determined that she had a broken arm and required surgery.

As this incident involved serious injuries as defined under the IIU regulation, the IIU is mandated to investigate.

Witnesses or individuals who have information or video footage that may assist this investigation are asked to contact the IIU toll-free at 1-844-667-6060.
