The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is currently investigating serious injuries related to a collision involving a stolen vehicle in Winnipeg.

On June 16, the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) notified the IIU of an incident that took place the same day. According to the notification, WPS received a call for service at approximately 11:48am regarding a confirmed stolen vehicle parked in the 400 block of College Avenue.

At 12:03pm, police were further advised that the vehicle had been driven off and last seen travelling eastbound on Mountain Avenue.

Officers located the stolen vehicle at approximately 12:08pm travelling in the vicinity of St. John’s Avenue and Main Street. Officers then lost sight of the vehicle and did not follow it for safety reasons. The vehicle was last observed travelling southbound on Main Street.

At 12:09pm, the stolen vehicle was involved in a collision with another vehicle at the intersection of Mountain Avenue and Salter Street. Multiple police units responded to the crash.

The male driver of the stolen vehicle, who remains unidentified, fled the scene of the collision. However, there were three passengers in the stolen vehicle who were transported to Health Sciences Centre (HSC) Winnipeg suffering injuries of varying severity. The driver of the other vehicle sustained minor injuries and was also transported to HSC.

As one of the passengers in the suspect vehicle suffered serious injuries, as defined under the IIU regulation, the IIU is mandated to investigate.

Witnesses or individuals who have information or video footage that may assist this investigation are asked to contact the IIU toll-free at 1-844-667-6060.
