The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating the recent death of an adult male following an officer-involved shooting that occurred in Winnipeg.
On July 14, 2026, the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) notified the IIU of an incident that occurred on July 13 at approximately 10:35pm. According to the notification, the WPS communications centre received a 911 call from a complainant reporting a dispute with a family member. The complainant stated his brother had locked him out of their shared home and noted his brother had mental health issues and was not taking prescribed medication.
At 9:58 p.m., the complainant phoned police again to advise that his brother was still locked inside the house and was screaming at him through the window. At 10:02pm, WPS general patrol units were dispatched to a residence on Avon Gate.
At 10:35 pm, officers were confronted by an adult male armed with an edged weapon. A use-of-force encounter took place, resulting in an officer discharging their service firearm and striking the male. Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service resources were requested immediately and several other WPS units were assigned to assist. The male was transported to Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg, where he was pronounced deceased.
As this incident involved an officer-involved shooting, the IIU is mandated to investigate.
