St. Pierre-Jolys RCMP are currently investigating the recent drowning of a Winnipeg teen that occurred in a gravel pit located south of Grunthal.

On July 19, 2026, at 9:30pm, St. Pierre-Jolys RCMP responded to a report of a drowning in a gravel pit on Road 25 East in the Rural Municipality (RM) of Hanover.

Police say that a group of friends were at the location when one person attempted to swim across the pit. The swimmer, an 18-year-old male from Winnipeg, subsequently disappeared under the water about halfway across and did not resurface.

Efforts were made by RCMP and the local fire department to find the swimmer. STARS also attended and flew over the pit with spotlights to assist with the search. Manitoba RCMP Underwater Recovery Team (URT) was consulted and were at the scene on July 20 in the morning.

RCMP report that in the early afternoon of the same day, URT discovered the missing teen deceased.

St. Pierre-Jolys RCMP continue to investigate this incident.
