The Manitoba government is implementing several safety measures at Sturgeon Falls Trail in Whiteshell Provincial Park following the tragic drownings of two children earlier this month.
“As a father myself, my heart goes out to the family of the two boys who tragically lost their lives, and also to the families who have lost a loved one to drowning at this site,” said Environment and Climate Change Minister Mike Moyes. “I have reviewed the safety assessment conducted by department experts and we are taking immediate action to ensure the safety of future park visitors at Sturgeon Falls.”
The Manitoba government’s planned upgrades include:
- installing fencing to prevent public access to slippery rock areas that have a high risk for accidents and injury;
- updating the current signage, developed in August 2023 to caution about slippery or hidden rocks, a strong current and a steep drop-off; and
- building fenced viewing areas to provide a safer space for Manitobans.
The Manitoba government shared planned safety upgrades with key local stakeholders in the Whiteshell area today. The trail will remain closed until these safety measures are installed.
“These safety measures will help ensure no other family has to suffer a tragic loss,” said Moyes. “We’re also reviewing whether additional safety measures are required in other locations in provincial parks to ensure Manitobans can safely enjoy our parks and outdoor spaces.”
The minister thanked the RCMP, Hutterian Emergency Aquatic Response Team (HEART), Turtle Aquatic Response Inc., Submerged Underwater Services Inc., local and regional fire and EMS personnel, Nutimik Lodge, North Whiteshell Business Association and other local businesses, the Whiteshell Cottagers Association, the Conservation Officers Service, Parks staff and volunteers who provided support in the search and recovery effort.
