The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating serious injuries sustained by an adult female cyclist following a collision with a police vehicle in Winnipeg.

On August 8, 2026, Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) notified the IIU of an incident that occurred on August 7 at approximately 8:49pm. According to the notification, WPS officers were responding to a call for assistance. The police vehicle was traveling westbound on Portage Avenue. As the vehicle entered the intersection of Portage Avenue and Garry Street on a green light, a female cyclist traveling northbound on Garry Street in the bike lane also entered the intersection. The police vehicle and the cyclist collided, knocking her to the ground.

Officers exited their vehicle and provided first aid to the cyclist. She was later transported to hospital and treated for a fractured clavicle and bruising.

As this incident involved a serious injury related to a collision with a police vehicle, the IIU is mandated to investigate. Witnesses or anyone with information or video footage that may assist the investigation are asked to contact the IIU toll-free at 1-844-667-6060.
