The Manitoba government is encouraging Manitobans to participate in Orange Shirt Day events in their communities to honour residential school survivors and the children who never made it home.
“Manitobans have an opportunity to gather together in the spirit of truth and reconciliation on Orange Shirt Day and show their support by joining a walk or listening to the words of our leaders and teachers,” said Premier Wab Kinew.
To make it easier to find an event, the Manitoba government has launched an interactive map with locations and details of more than 50 events taking place across the province. Events include walks, seminars, dedication ceremonies and feasts.
Orange Shirt Day is observed annually on Sept. 30. The day provides an opportunity to recognize and reflect on the tragic history and ongoing legacy of residential schools. Sept. 30 is also the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
Since 2024, the Manitoba government has supported projects that bring Manitobans together to mark Orange Shirt Day through the Orange Shirt Day Fund. The fund supports projects and initiatives that create opportunities for Manitobans to gather for observation, reflection and commemoration. This year, the fund provided $1 million to support events.
