Another important piece of the Boundary Trails Health Centre (BTHC) expansion is opening its doors, as the hospital’s pharmacy team begins moving into its new space in October, 2026.
The new hospital pharmacy represents another significant milestone in the ongoing expansion and redevelopment of BTHC – an investment designed to strengthen health-care services and increase capacity for residents of the Morden and Winkler area.
The move into the new pharmacy will take place in two phases, allowing the team to safely transition existing operations while completing the specialized work required to bring the full space into service.
Phase 1 – Beginning of October, will involve relocating the pharmacy’s medication distribution, storage and related operations into the new space. The larger, modern and purpose-built environment will better support medication preparation and distribution while positioning the pharmacy team to meet the increasingly complex needs of a growing hospital and region.
Phase 2 – Will focus on completing the final commissioning, validation and operational readiness work required for the pharmacy’s new state-of-the-art chemotherapy compounding area.
This highly specialized space has been designed to support compliance with rigorous National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities (NAPRA) requirements and applicable Canadian accreditation standards. Once the remaining fine-tuning and readiness activities are completed over the coming months, the area will provide enhanced capacity for the preparation of specialized chemotherapy medications.
Expansion was driven by significant population growth and increasing demand for health-care services in the area. When construction began, the vision was clear: create additional capacity at Boundary Trails Health Centre and bring more specialized health-care services closer to home for patients and families.
The opening of the new pharmacy is another important step toward realizing that vision.
For the pharmacy team, the opening of the new pharmacy marks much more than a move into a new workspace. It represents years of planning and preparation and provides a modern environment from which staff can continue their important work, supporting safe, high-quality patient care across the hospital.
As additional components of the expansion open and existing areas of BTHC are redeveloped, each milestone brings the health centre closer to the expanded regional facility envisioned for the communities it serves.
Southern Health-Santé Sud extends its thanks to the pharmacy team and all staff, physicians, project partners and BTHC Foundation whose work has helped make this milestone possible.
