On August 19, 2017, at approximately 1:15 pm, Portage la Prairie RCMP responded to a serious two-vehicle collision at the intersection of the Trans-Canada Highway and Highway 16.

Police say that a minivan traveling east on the Trans-Canada Highway attempted to make a left turn to head north on Highway 16, when it collided with a westbound semi.

Investigation determined that there were five occupants in the van. A 36-year-old male passenger and a 13-year-old male passenger were pronounced deceased at the scene. A 10-year-old male passenger was transported to hospital and has since died. The 35-year-old female driver and a eight-year-old male passenger are in critical but stable condition in hospital. All the occupants are from Carberry. The 62-year-old male semi driver from Ontario sustained minor injuries.

RCMP report that all involved in this incident were wearing seatbelts and alcohol is not considered to be a factor in the collision.
