A sea of yellow could be seen all over Steinbach and surrounding highways when 2020 people showed up for the 13th annual Pick up and Walk event – held this past weekend on Saturday, May 5th.
“Numbers were up considerably this year, with 400 more volunteers than last year,” explains Grace Hiebert, event organizer. “We knew that there would be an increase in the number of volunteers, because the numbers go up each year – but we were thrilled and surprised by such a significant increase.”
A total of 22 local churches helped to organize the event this year and as a result, 10.39 tons of garbage was picked up, saving the city approximately $50,000. “I’m constantly amazed at the way our residents come together for this event,” said Eldon Wallman, City of Steinbach Solid Waste Dept Head. “Just when I thought this day could never be as good as the year before, I’m blown away with the teamwork and dedication to the Pick Up and Walk! Great work everyone!” Wallman also expressed his gratitude to all involved.
Specific routes were organized in advance and the volunteers included those picking up garbage, truck drivers who picked up filled bags along specific routes, and those who prepared and served the free barbecue lunch for all participants. Volunteers started on their routes at 9am and were done by noon. Many businesses sponsored the event by their donations which covered the expenses of the event. Hiebert expressed thanks for the support received from local businesses, “We are very thankful for the wonderful support we received from businesses in Steinbach. We live in a very generous community!”
Steinbach Mayor, Chris Goertzen welcomed everyone and thanked the volunteers from the churches for their support. Pastor Kris Duerksen, from Southland Church, led in a prayer before everyone headed out on the various routes.
The Pick Up and Walk event is held annually on the 1st Saturday in May. Next years’ event is scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 4th, 2019.
