The RCMP in Manitoba has partnered with the Moose Hide Campaign and launched a month long, province-wide effort to help reduce, and one day, end, violence towards women and children.
From September 17 to October 17, 2018, RCMP detachments across the province will be holding community events to raise awareness about gender-based violence, the resources available to victims of abuse and violence as well as to discuss and promote gender equity and healthy relationships.
“Domestic violence and gender-based violence should be a concern for all Manitobans,” said Justice Minister Cliff Cullen. “Education and awareness is an important first step to end the violence. The Moose Hide Campaign is an innovative way to engage Manitobans to work together to stand up against violence towards women and children.”
“The tragic reality is that violence against women and children is far too prevalent in our communities,” said Assistant Commissioner Scott Kolody, Commanding Officer of Manitoba RCMP. “By raising awareness of the Moose Hide Campaign and its goals, we hope to start a real conversation in the communities we serve. Across this province, our officers will be making a renewed and concentrated effort of working with community members to end violence towards women and children.”
While the campaign targets men and boys, everyone is encouraged to participate.
Support for the Moose Hide Campaign is demonstrated by wearing a moose hide square (pin) which signifies ones commitment to honour, respect and protect the women and children in their life and to work together to end violence against women and children. All employees of the RCMP in Manitoba have been encouraged to wear the moose hide to show their support of this important initiative.
“It is great to see a policing organization like the RCMP support us in our journey,” said Paul Lacerte who co-founded the Moose Hide Campaign with his daughter Raven in 2011. “Our goal is to distribute 10 million moose hide pins across Canada and the world to raise awareness and action to end violence against all women and children in Canada. The RCMP is really helping our efforts in Manitoba by organizing community events to bring people together to take a stand.”
