A 21-year-old Bloodvein woman has died after an SUV, being driven by an impaired Berens River man, struck her on Main Road in the community of Berens River.

On January 1, 2019, at approximately 2:15am, Berens River RCMP received a report of a vehicle-pedestrian collision that occurred on Main Road in the community of Berens River. Police investigation has determined that an SUV, being driven by a 36-year-old man from Berens River, was traveling west on Main Road when it struck a 21-year-old woman. The female pedestrian was from Bloodvein and was walking in a westerly direction with a small group of people.

Police say that the driver of the vehicle stopped at the scene and then immediately drove to the Berens River RCMP office and alerted officers as to what occurred.

The 21-year-old was pronounced deceased at the scene.

RCMP report that 36-year-old David Ernest George from Berens River has been charged with impaired driving causing death. He has been released from custody on a recognizance and will appear in court scheduled on March 12, 2019, in Berens River.

Alcohol and speed are believed to be factors in this incident. Berens River RCMP and an RCMP Forensic Collision Reconstructionist continue to investigate.
