A member of the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) has been charged with assault causing bodily harm following an investigation by Manitoba’s Independent Investigation Unit (IIU).

WPS advised the IIU that on June 16, 2018, officers followed a vehicle being driven erratically throughout the city. The vehicle was stopped in the area of Portage Avenue and the Perimeter Highway and a 36-year-old male driver was removed from the vehicle. The driver was uncooperative and force was used to subdue him. The man complained of injuries and was taken to hospital where he was found to have sustained a fracture to his right orbital bone. IIU was mandated to investigate.

The IIU conducted a thorough and independent investigation into the circumstances of the incident and Civilian Director Zane Tessler has determined there are reasonable and probable grounds to believe a criminal offence occurred.

Constable Dustin Rodeck met with IIU investigators and was served with a summons to appear in Provincial Court in Winnipeg on August 7.
