Manitobans are encouraged to honour the hard work, dedication and sacrifices of police and peace officers by attending a memorial service for the fallen at the Legislative Building grounds on Sunday,  September 29, 2019.

“Police and Peace Officers’ National Memorial Day is an opportunity for Manitobans to express their appreciation for the police and peace officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service of their communities,” said Justice Minister Cliff Cullen.

The minister noted the Manitoba Association of Chiefs of Police (MACP) is hosting the event, which takes place on Sunday, Sept. 29 at 11am at the south grounds of the Legislative Building. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in the Rotunda.

“Being a police officer or peace officer has always required a willingness to sacrifice,” said Marc Robichaud, president, MACP. “It’s important that we honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of their communities.”

Cullen will represent the province of Manitoba at the service, which coincides with the national event being held in Ottawa on the same date.

In 1998, the Government of Canada proclaimed the last Sunday in September of every year as Police and Peace Officers’ National Memorial Day.

The RCMP holds a special service annually at the RCMP Training Academy in Regina during the first week in September, and every year police agencies across the country hold memorial services throughout the month.
