Steinbach is hosting a birthday party for Manitoba 150 on Monday, February 17 and the whole community is invited. From Noon to 6pm, residents are encouraged to make their way to the TG Smith Centre and outdoor Community Plaza for a packed schedule of fun activities.

“It has all the elements of a great birthday party – music, activities, and refreshments,” said Cassandra Kornelsen, City Recreation Services Coordinator and now birthday party planner, “We wanted to provide a fun day for families to come out and spend time together doing what Manitobans enjoy doing.”

The event schedule includes everything from fire shows, storytelling, creative arts and crafts, milk jug curling, speed skating demonstrations, face painting, a scavenger hunt, and snow sculpturing to even a movie matinee of “Winnie the Pooh”, a franchise inspired by “Winnie” a real bear named after his owner’s hometown of Winnipeg. Attendees are reminded to bring their skates for public skating as well.

The free event is being funded by the Celebrate 150 Program, a provincial grant that the City received only a few short weeks ago, “We were pleasantly surprised that our application was successful and we started to plan right away,” said Kornelsen, adding “We have only been able to get everything in place because we have so many great community organizations willing to help make this a great event.”

To provide a safe pathway for the celebration, which includes activities in the Steinbach Legion, the following road closures will be in effect from 11:30am to 6:30pm the day of the event:

  • Elmdale Street will be closed to through traffic from Reimer Avenue to Barkman Avenue. Entrance to the Steinbach Credit Union and T.G. Smith Centre will continue to be accessible via Reimer.
  • Lumber Avenue will be closed to traffic from north of the Steinbach Credit Union parking lot access to Elmdale Street. Motorists will still be able to access the Steinbach Credit Union and Main Street back lane off of Lumber Avenue.
  • All sidewalks will remain open.
