The City of Steinbach has announced its support for a new five-year pilot program focused on economic development. The program is a private-public partnership that will see the Steinbach Chamber of Commerce hire the first Economic Development Officer (EDO) in the city.

“We think the timing of this pilot program is right for the city and we are pleased to have partners from the private sector to make it happen,” said Mayor Earl Funk. “It means a dedicated resource will focus on identifying development opportunities and the spear heading of economic activities for Steinbach.”

A governing committee will be formed, with representation from the community and the Steinbach Chamber of Commerce who are contributing office space where the new EDO will reside. The committee will oversee the hiring process and set the pilot program’s strategic goals.

“Ultimately, we want the program to build on our local economy and get people to consider living here, opening their business here, or at least coming for a visit,” added Mayor Funk.

The City of Steinbach says that it has committed to match private investment funding of up to $65,000 annually for the five year term of the program.
