The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred on December 3, 2022, in Winnipeg.

On December 3, the IIU was notified by the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) of an incident that occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m. that evening. According to the notification, a male suspect was the subject of outstanding arrest warrants. Upon attending the residence where the male was believed to be present to effect an arrest, WPS officers observed the male driving away. The vehicle was located and stopped by WPS officers near the intersection of Portage Avenue at Bourkevale Drive. A use of force encounter occurred resulting in a WPS officer discharging his service firearm and striking the male. The male was conveyed to Health Sciences Centre where he succumbed to his injuries.

Any injury caused by the discharge of a firearm by a police officer is defined as a serious injury under IIU regulations. The IIU is mandated to investigate and a team of investigators was deployed.
