Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure is asking drivers in Manitoba to take extra caution this weekend as crews of young people will be on the shoulder and close to provincial highways for the provincewide road cleanup campaign led by 4-H members.
The 4-H Manitoba Highway Cleanup event, typically held in May or June, is an annual program where 4-H clubs clean up highways and roadsides across the province. This community service project allows 4-H members to improve the environment and provide a community service. In the past, clubs have cleaned hundreds of kilometres of highways and roadsides.
All 4-H participants will be wearing a safety vest and areas being cleaned will be marked with safety signs. Motorists are reminded to be aware of the added foot traffic alongside Manitoba’s highways and roads, keep a safe distance between their vehicles and any traffic barriers, trucks, equipment and volunteers, slow down in marked cleanup areas and remove all distractions to ensure they are paying attention to the road.
The campaign is scheduled for June 7 from 9am to 3pm, weather permitting. In case of rain, the alternate date for the cleanup campaign is June 14.
