Manitobans can now see where Manitoba Hydro plans to perform important vegetation management activities in a new online, interactive map.
The new feature is available at hydro.mb.ca. It highlights areas where tree trimming and removal, mechanical brush clearing, and selective herbicide application are being performed or planned in the current fiscal year.
Manitoba Hydro is focusing more resources on this vegetation management work to enhance reliability for customers and safety for the public and employees. Tree contacts are the second most common cause of power outages in Manitoba, and power lines downed by trees are a safety hazard.
Typically, customers will be informed directly of planned vegetation management in their area as the date approaches. However, advanced notification may not be possible in urgent situations such as downed wires or threats to public safety.
“This is a step forward in our communication about where we’re trimming trees and other work,” said Peter Chura, Media Relations Officer for Manitoba Hydro. “We are continuing to look for other ways to keep customers informed of the importance of this work and when we may working in their area.”
In urban areas trees are usually trimmed around power lines. However, trees may need to be removed depending on species, location, and hazard they pose. Manitoba Hydro uses heavy machinery to clear brush near infrastructure in rural areas, and targeted herbicide to prevent growth of specific vegetation.
If you see our crews or contractors trimming or clearing vegetation, please keep a safe distance.
Customers are also reminded that they are responsible for keeping trees on their property clear of powerlines. Always contact a trained utility arborist or local tree service who can work safely around overhead power lines.
