The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is currently investigating a recent incident involving injuries sustained by an adult male suspect while in RCMP custody.
On October 8, 2025, RCMP notified the IIU of an incident that occurred on October 7 at approximately 8:28am. According to the notification, RCMP received a report of a male parked in the middle of the road and dancing in traffic near Provincial Trunk Highway (PTH) 101 and PTH 15. Members attended the scene and located a highly intoxicated male, who they arrested and transported to the RCMP Selkirk detachment. While enroute to the detachment, the male became non-verbal and was moaning and groaning. Once at the detachment, he was assessed by emergency medical services (EMS) and taken to Selkirk Hospital, where he was assessed and medically cleared. He was then taken into police custody.
Later the same day, while members were in the process of releasing the male, he complained that his ankle was broken, after reportedly falling off the cell bench sometime overnight. EMS attended the cells and the male was transported back to Selkirk Hospital, where it was confirmed that he suffered a broken ankle.
As this incident involved serious injuries as defined under the IIU regulation, the IIU is mandated to investigate.
Witnesses or individuals who have information or video footage that may assist this investigation are asked to contact the IIU toll-free at 1-844-667-6060.
