The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating the death of an adult male following an officer-involved shooting in Winnipeg.

On June 19, the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) notified the IIU of an incident that occurred at approximately 1:28am. According to the notification, WPS officers responded to a report of a domestic incident in progress at a residence in the first block of Morrow Avenue in Winnipeg. The initial information received from the female complainant was that her boyfriend had been fighting with her. She reported having a bruised face and requested an ambulance.

The female identified her boyfriend and stated that he was armed with an edged weapon. She further reported a history of violence involving the male that had previously been reported to police. The female was also identified as the protected person in a court order involving the male. Four children were also reported to be present at the residence.

At approximately 1:32am, the first of several police units arrived on-scene, including one officer equipped with a body-worn camera. Within approximately three minutes of police arriving, officers were confronted by the male, who was armed with a weapon. A use-of-force encounter occurred at the front entrance of the unit during which a WPS officer discharged a firearm. The male was transported Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg in critical condition. Despite medical intervention, he succumbed to his injuries and died.

As the incident involved a fatality, the IIU is mandated to investigate.
