Health and Seniors Care Minster Audrey Gordon, joined by other officials, including Steinbach MLA Kelvin Goertzen and Jane Curtis, chief executive officer, Southern Health-Santé Sud, announced that the first phase of a new 105-bed personal care home in Carman has officially opened.

The current five-day COVID-19 test positivity rate is 2.8 per cent provincially and 1.5 per cent in Winnipeg. As of 9:30am on August 26, 2021, 201 new cases of the virus have been identified since Monday: 40 cases on Tuesday, Aug. 24; 105 cases Wednesday, Aug. 25; and 56 today. Five cases have been removed due to data corrections, bringing the total number of lab-confirmed cases in Manitoba to 58,479.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) of Manitoba Finance seized almost 10,000 contraband cigarettes and 32,000 grams of shisha following tobacco compliance inspections throughout Winnipeg.

The Manitoba government will require all provincial employees who work with vulnerable populations to be fully immunized for COVID-19 by Oct. 31, or undergo regular testing. The first dose needs to be completed by Sept. 7, the first day of school, and the second dose completed by Oct. 17.

The Manitoba government is extending the state of emergency in efforts to continue to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and variants. The extension went into effect Tuesday, Aug. 24 at 4pm and will stay in place for a period of 30 days.

Recent rains have allowed the Manitoba Wildfire Service to remove the last of the fire and travel restrictions that had been in place in Area 4. This is the large area north of the Wanipigow River, east of Lake Winnipeg to the Ontario border, including Atikaki Provincial Park, and north to Poplar River.

The 10 youth winners of the province’s Vax to Win lottery have been drawn and their decision to be immunized has resulted in each of them winning a $25,000 scholarship.
