The City of Steinbach held its Financial Plan public hearing for 2011 early in February, which provided information about the projects and purchases that will take place or continue in the coming year.
Some of the more significant projects and purchases are:
Construction Projects
• Completion of sewage lagoon expansion – $2,450,000
• Completion of landfill expansion – $2,000,000
• Library expansion – $2,000,000
• Reimer Avenue / Pine Crescent reconstruction – $1,300,000
• Deerfield Estates pathway – $560,000
• Operations Building shop expansion – $550,000
• Pavement management program – $520,000

Funding for these items is generated from a variety of sources. A capital grant in the amount of $7.0 million was approved by the federal government to offset the $10.56 million costs of the sewage lagoon expansion. Additional grants will be received to help pay for the pavement management program and the library expansion. The remaining project and program costs will be funded by a combination of taxation and user fees.
In total, the City anticipates that $11.4 million of construction work and equipment purchases will be completed in 2011, in addition to approximately $11.8 million to be spent on operating programs among all departments.
While the tender amounts for the 2011 Capital Works Program came in higher than anticipated, Council awarded a slightly reduced scope of work to Maple Leaf Construction for $1,461,794.00 plus GST. A portion of the Reimer Avenue Watermain Renewal (from Pine to Walnut) was removed from the Capital Works Program to remain in line with the City’s 2011 budget. At this week’s Council meeting, Council also awarded the Deerfield Sidewalk Extension – Phase 2 construction project to Maple Leaf Construction.
