Steinbach Solid Waste Department Head, Eldon Wallman, is pleased with the results of the first day of operation for the Community Compost Depots. The depots, located at both the Steinbach Junior High School track and in the Woodlawn School yard, saw a combined total of about 100 vehicles come through.

Considering how the preceding weather hampered early yard cleanup, it was still a great first day of collecting yard waste, said Wallman. Nearly 100 residents showed up and deposited 1.3 tonnes of material. Well done Steinbach!

Wallman noted that the 1.3 tonnes (2,866 pounds) of material collected was mostly dry material and had likely been stored since last fall.

It is the Citys hope that the depots will encourage more residents to bring their grass clippings to the depots for composting instead of leaving them for curbside waste collection where the yard waste is not sorted from the other waste for composting.

The Compost Depots will be available all summer, Saturdays from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.
