The City of Steinbach celebrated Arbour Day over the past week by encouraging future generations to be environmentally responsible through tree planting.
Joyce Purchase, Landscape Technician with the Citys Parks and Recreation Department, together with two Parks summer employees, visited Southwood and Woodlawn Schools and provided demonstrations on how to plant and care for White Spruce seedlings. Students were then provided with their own seedling to take home, plant, and care for.
This is a valuable project, said Purchase. Not only is it good for the environment to plant trees, it also teaches kids about conservation and the importance of giving back to the planet instead of always taking. It teaches young people responsibility in caring for nature.
Over 1,700 trees will be handed out this week. The City purchases the seedlings from the Manitoba Forestry Association office in Sandilands and has been promoting this program in schools for over 30 years.
