The Manitoba Product Stewardship Corporation (MPSC) recently released the 2007/2008 Annual Report on recycling in Manitoba and Steinbach residents continue to be among the top recyclers.

“The recycling habits of our community are nothing short of awesome!” said Solid Waste Dept. Head, Eldon Wallman. “The progress we have made in the last 10 years is an amazing testament to the concerns our residents have about the environment. We’ve come a long way and the future for recycling and environmental initiatives in Steinbach looks very promising.”

The following is a comparison of some of the information shown in the report (Population shown in brackets):

Steinbach (11,066) – 1,661,040 kgs recycled, equaling 150 kgs per person

Winkler (9,106) – 795,550 kgs recycled, equaling 87 kgs per person

Portage la Prairie (12,728) – 1,077,250 kgs recycled, equaling 85 kgs per person

Winnipeg (633,451) – 42,530,840 tons recycled, equaling 67 kgs per person

R.M. of Hanover (11,871) – 719,400 kgs recycled, equaling 61 kgs per person

Brandon (41,511) – 2,303,250 kgs recycled, equaling 55 kgs per person

“The total number of tons diverted from landfill has far outstripped the projections developed in the mid 1990’s,” wrote MPSC General Manager, Jim Fogg. “There is no disputing that MPSC’s multi-material approach works and is cost effective and efficient.”

The City wishes to thank all Steinbach residents for being environmentally responsible.
