A 54-year-old man from Souris, Manitoba, is dead after his car collided with an ambulance north of Souris yesterday evening.

On January 5, 2011, at about 6pm, RCMP from Souris, Brandon, Hamiota, and Carberry Detachments as well as local Emergency Services were dispatched to the scene of a two vehicle, head-on collision, approximately 5 km north of Souris, in the RM of Glenwood, Manitoba.

Initial investigation indicates that a 2006 Kia Spectra was traveling south on PR 250 when it collided with a northbound ambulance. Witness reports indicate the Kia appeared to cross over the center line into the path of the ambulance.

The driver and lone occupant of the Kia, a 54-year-old man from Souris, Manitoba, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The Driver of the ambulance was transported to hospital in Winnipeg with critical injuries. The second EMT and patient were transported to hospital with serious injuries.

An RCMP Traffic Collision Analyst attended to assist with the investigation and the highway remained closed to traffic until about 11pm.

RCMP report that speed and alcohol are not considered factors in the collision at this time.

Police continue to investigate.
