National Non-Smoking Week

"Breaking up is hard to do theme" during National Non-Smoking Week.

What is National Non-Smoking Week?

NNSW has been observed for more than 30 years and is one of the longest running and most important events in the ongoing public education efforts regarding the consequences of tobacco use. Its goals are:

• to educate Canadians about the dangers of smoking;
• to prevent people who do not smoke from beginning to smoke and becoming addicted to tobacco;
• to help people quit smoking; and to promote the right of individuals to breathe smoke-free air.

Breaking up is hard to do

The 2012 National Non-Smoking Week theme is “Breaking up is hard to do”. The relationship between smokers and their cigarettes is complex. Smokers may love their cigarettes and enjoy them but they know that in the long term, cigarettes steal their money, their health, and end up controlling them. It is much like being in an abusive relationship. The Lung Association urges smokers to consider “breaking up” with their cigarettes – make 2012 the year that you end this destructive relationship. Why do we continue to be concerned about tobacco use?

Tobacco remains the leading preventable cause of disease and death in Canada, killing 37,000 Canadians annually. Direct health care costs from tobacco exceed $4.4 billion per year, and total economic costs are greater than $17 billion per year.1 For every premature death caused by tobacco, there are at least 20 people living with a tobacco-related illness.2 The burden of tobacco disease is an epidemic, and must be treated as such.
