A Winkler man has drowned while ice fishing after his ATV went through the ice on Cedar Lake yesterday afternoon.

On April 2, 2012, just after 12pm noon, Grand Raids RCMP as well as local emergency services were dispatched to the scene of a drowning on Cedar Lake at Grand Rapids, Manitoba.

Initial investigation indicates that two men were operating ATV’s on Cedar Lake while ice fishing, when one of machines went through the ice.

Police say that the operator of the ATV that went through the ice, a 54-year-old man from Winkler, Manitoba, was not able to reach safety and went under the water. The operator of the second ATV, an adult male, was able to get to shore safely, but could not reach the other operator.

Emergency personal were able reach the scene by boat and recover the body of the man. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

RCMP warn that the ice conditions are unsafe for travel, and operating any vehicle on the ice at this time is not recommended.
