On May 1, 2012, shortly before 5am, Steinbach RCMP were alerted to a bear sighting in the southeast area of Steinbach.

Police responded and located the Black bear in the area of McKenzie Avenue and Hespeler Street south where it was scared off into a heavily treed area. Local Manitoba Conservation Officials were advised.

Police are cautioning the public to be mindful of bears and report bear sightings that could pose a hazard to the public.

Bears are looking for food sources this time of year and the public can take steps to reduce the chances of bears coming into urban areas. The public is reminded not to leave garbage outside for extended periods of time and to be mindful that dog food and cat food left outside may attract bears to their property.

More information is available on the Manitoba Conservation Website and can be found under their “Bear Smart” Program.
