A career nowhere near ordinary

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police offers a challenging, exciting, and rewarding career to those who want to make a difference in their communities and across Canada. The RCMP is always recruiting and we are looking for people from all walks of life to join Canada’s national police service.

As part of the RCMP’s recruiting efforts, Northwest Region Recruiting in partnership with the RCMP Academy, “Depot” Division, is sending 32 high-school students from across three provinces and two territories to the second annual youth camp for one week in August.

Due to the incredible success of last year’s inaugural camp, attended by 16 high school students from Alberta, this year’s Camp has been expanded to include students from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut. Furthermore, this year’s camp has doubled in size to include 32 students.

The students were selected based on academic achievement and their interest in a career in policing. They will learn what it’s like to be a police officer in training through observation of, and participation in, activities including drill, driver simulation training, firearms, and tours of the RCMP Academy and the RCMP Heritage Centre.

The 32 students selected for the Depot Youth Camp are reflective of the typical RCMP cadet troops. Essentially, this means the students are a co-ed group that represents the Canadian mosaic. At the end of the week-long camp, students will have developed a good understanding of what life would be like as a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and they will have had the unique opportunity to experience life as a cadet even before they submit an application to join the ranks of the RCMP.

“It was an incredible experience to be part of last year’s first-ever Depot Youth Camp and I am thrilled that we have doubled this year’s youth camp and expanded it to include three provinces and two territories,” said Cst. PJ DEMURIAK, a member of the Alberta RCMP recruiting team, and one of the recruiters who helped create and grow the Depot Youth Camp. “The RCMP offers more than 150 different types of careers, so regardless of a person’s background, there is a career for everyone who becomes a member of our prestigious and long-standing organization.”

The camp runs from August 13 through August 17, 2012. Recruiters from the participating provinces and territories and instructors from the RCMP Academy will join the students and act as mentors, teachers, and role models throughout the duration of the Camp and beyond.
