The Saskatoon Police Service will be investigating the death of a Shamattawa, Manitoba, woman after she became ill while being in police custody.

On September 3, 2012, in Thompson, a 39-year-old female from Shamattawa, Manitoba, became ill while in police custody. RCMP report that the woman was immediately transported by ambulance to local hospital and later transferred to hospital in Winnipeg. On September 7, 2012, the woman died in hospital.

An autopsy has been completed and results are pending.

Although the woman died in hospital, she was in police custody at the time when she became ill, therefore, RCMP policy requires an independent investigation into the death of the individual. The Saskatoon Police Service has agreed to oversee the matter and have assigned an investigator.

The investigation is ongoing.
