On September 18, 2012, just before 1pm, Portage la Prairie RCMP as well as local emergency services were dispatched to the scene of a collision involving a train and a heavy truck on road 39 W, about 3 miles north of Portage la Prairie.

Investigation indicates that a heavy truck, hauling potatoes, was traveling north on road 39 W when it was struck by a westbound CP freight train at a level crossing. The crossing is marked with railway crossing signs.

The driver of the semi, a 41-year-old man from Portage la Prairie, was transported to hospital with undetermined injuries that were reported to appear non-life threatening. The crew of the train were not injured and there were no other persons or vehicles involved.

Police say that there was a quantity of diesel fuel spilled from the truck. Crews were on scene working on a clean up of the fuel.

Police continue to investigate.
