35 years ago, Bill Wiebe, started working at the City of Steinbach in the Sanitation Department as employee 19. When asked what has changed the most he refers to the trucks. He much prefers the side loaders that didn’t exist when he started. In the beginning Bill rode at the back of the garbage truck, jumping down at each stop along the route. He remembers a smaller Steinbach, “We used to get (garbage) cans right from inside people’s garages, dump them and then put them back.”

Eldon Wallman, Wiebe’s supervisor, speaks of his dedication to the job, “It is amazing that Bill has persistently done one of most difficult and thankless jobs for this long. Bill comes to work every day and does an outstanding job, he’s an outstanding employee.” Wallman also indicated that although Wiebe has been eligible for retirement for quite a while, he still prefers to come to work. When asked if there was something else he ever wanted to do, Bill states, “It’s a good job. I don’t think I’d like an office job too much. I prefer to work mostly outside.”
