Carman Area RCMP have had a recent increase in complaints regarding what is commonly referred to as the “Emergency Scam” or the “Grandparent Scam”.

In this scam, a family member, often a grandparent, receives a phone call from a con-artist who pretends to be family member (frequently a grandchild). The con-artist then says that they are in some sort of trouble, such as being caught driving while impaired and/or being involved in a car accident, and need money immediately. The caller often specifically asks that they do not want other family members knowing about the situation.

Wanting to help their family member, the victim sends money via a money transfer company such as Western Union. Victims don’t verify the information until after the money has been sent.

Information about this and other scams can be found on the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (Phonebusters) website.

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre is a national call centre where victims can report fraud complaints such as this. The information collected assists with investigations.  The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre can also be reached by telephone at 1-888-495-8501.
