New traffic signal lights were turned on today, making the intersection of McKenzie Avenue and Main Street in Steinbach safer for residents.

The new lights are a welcome addition as traffic in this area has been increasing steadily, particularly with the opening of the Clearspring Middle School. Instead of working on a continuous loop, the new lights include overhead cameras and sensors that change light signals based on the arrival of vehicles to the intersection.

Mayor Chris Goertzen had the honor of switching on the new lights, “The lights help traffic flow in this area making it safer for pedestrians and safer for drivers.” The City meets regularly with Manitoba Highways to discuss requirements for roadways in Steinbach. The McKenzie Avenue and Main Street intersection was one of the top priorities identified. “They are a great investment into the safety of our City”, says Goertzen.

The project, funded by the provincial government, cost about $250,000. Thank you goes to Hanover School Division who provided letters of support for the project.
