The Province of Manitoba today continued its support for collaborative efforts between northern Manitoba and Israel, Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives Minister Rosann Wowchuk said, as she presented the Jewish National Fund (JNF) of Canada Prairie Region with a $334,000 cheque.

“Manitoba and Israel share many of the same challenges with food production in extreme climate conditions,” said Wowchuk.  “It’s mutually beneficial for us to work together and share information to improve the sustainability of both regions including the availability of affordable, healthy and nutritious food.”

The funds announced today are the final instalment of a $1-million commitment to promote the exchange of information and technology between the two communities. This exchange supports innovative projects in food production in northern communities, agro-forestry and efficient use of water in agriculture.

“We cherish the co-operation between the Jewish National Fund, the State of Israel and the Province of Manitoba,” said Erez Rotem, JNF director.  “We are looking forward to encouraging this partnership for all people and are looking into new opportunities that will help both Israelis and Canadians.”

The province’s $1-million commitment will be combined with additional funds raised by the JNF, a not-for-profit organization.  The JNF has made significant transformations to the health, sustainability and living conditions in Israel since its inception in 1901.

Manitoba hosted a joint international water symposium with the JNF in August 2008, which brought together 24 water experts from Israel and Manitoba to share research and information on water quality and conservation.
