Manitobans with hearing of speech difficulties have a new way to contact the RCMP and other emergency services. The Manitoba RCMP Divisional Operational Call Centre (DOCC), the centre that takes calls and dispatches RCMP officers throughout the province, now has the technology to receive a text call from a registered client through the Text with 911 initiative.

The RCMP is dedicated to keeping Canadians safe, and this is one more way the RCMP in Manitoba are able to do that. Those with hearing and speech difficulties in Manitoba can register their wireless devices with their provider to access the service. When a registered user calls 911 from their wireless device, the DOCC is notified there is a call from a user with hearing and/or speech difficulties and will initiate a text conversation with the caller. The DOCC operators will handle the call as they would any other call for service, but will communicate with the caller through text messaging.

To use this service:

  • Users must register with their service provider prior to being able to access the text 911 service
  • Any registered users can access any 911 centre travelling across Canada

DOCC operators have these tips for Text with 911 users:

  • Avoid text slang and abbreviations
  • Be brief, clear and concise with the information you are providing

The DOCC launched the Text with 911 initiative on June 3, 2014, at 8:00 am. To date, there have been no calls for RCMP service through text messaging.
