Nominees for the 2009 Fred Douglas Humanitarian Awards.

Community volunteers from Vita and Oakbank were among those recently honoured with nominations for the 2009 Fred Douglas Humanitarian Awards. The Love of Caring Award celebrates volunteers who demonstrate care and compassion for the elderly, and a commitment to improving the quality of life for Manitoba seniors.

Susan Thiessen from Vita, who has been an active volunteer with Vita and District Seniors Resource Council for the past ten years, was nominated by Sharon Yatsko, Resource Coordinator. According to Sharon, Susan has done just about every job there is, including being President of the Resource council for 5 years. “She does it all with love, understanding and compassion, and the most amazing thing is she thinks she is not doing much,” says Sharon.

Lorraine and John Kozera from Oakbank, nominated by Diane Dumas, Resource Coordinator for Springfield, are a true volunteer team in supporting their community. Lorraine is involved on a daily basis with the Adult Day Program, Personal Care Home and Palliative Care program, while John leads an exercise program, coordinates a bi-weekly bowling trip and is current President of the Silver Threads Seniors Club. They are also willing drivers who ensure that all area seniors can participate in local events. According to Diane, Lorraine and John “go that extra mile and bring dedication and caring to every life they touch.”

A total of twenty-one nominees from around the province were celebrated at the 2009 Fred Douglas Humanitarian Awards Reception held May 13, 2009 in Winnipeg. Their inspirational stories were shared with the large audience in attendance, and each nominee received a recognition certificate.
