On June 13, 2009 just before 1 p.m., RCMP Headingley Rural Detachment and RM of Cartier EMS were dispatched to a collision between a train and a vehicle on Dugas Siding Road in the RM of Cartier.

RCMP arrived on scene and learned that a northbound car collided with a westbound VIA Rail passenger train at the railway intersection of Dugas Siding Road in the RM of Cartier, about 3 miles east of Elie. The lone driver of the car, a 76-year-old from the area, was pronounced deceased at the scene.  None of the passengers on board of the train were injured.  The train was heading to Melville, Saskatchewan from Winnipeg and sustained minimal damage.

The railway intersection is controlled by stop signs and a railway crossing sign. Alcohol is not considered a contributing factor at this time.

The name of the deceased will not be released pending next of kin. RCMP continue to investigate with the assistance of CN Police.
