On Saturday morning, June 20, 2015, the South Eastman Transition Initiative held a work day at its GreenSpace Options site located on the corner of First Street and Brandt Road in Steinbach.

A dozen or so volunteers worked for about three hours spreading compost on a large area of the experimental site it is managing. Organizers explained that spreading compost helps build up the soil to produce healthy grass so dandelions have a harder time competing for space. The area composted had been aerated at an earlier date.

Experiments at the site consist of aeration, composting, over seeding, testing various grass varieties, alternative ground covers and non-toxic weed control products, as well as growing food in raised boxes.

Those gathered for the work day experienced the pleasure of shared work, a common vision, lots of visiting and even tasty treats at break time. The site is welcome to anyone that would like to take note of what is happening there on this first year of a three-year project.
