The chief provincial public health officer’s report on the health status of Manitobans has been accepted by the government and will be tabled during the next legislative session.

“This report provides our government with a fresh, engaging look at the social and physical environmental factors that promote health and wellness,” said Health Minister Sharon Blady. “I would like to thank Dr. Michael Routledge, our chief provincial public health officer, and his team for developing this report to help in our continuous efforts to improve the health of Manitobans.”

Under the Public Health Act, the chief provincial public health officer is required to submit a report on the health status of Manitobans at least every five years. Titled Healthy Environments, Healthy People, this report describes the factors that affect the health of Manitobans.

“The health-care system is only one part of the equation,” said Routledge. “A successful strategy must also look at the social and physical environments beyond the health-care system that have major impacts on population health and wellness.”

The report uses a life stage framework, describing the health and wellness issues that occur at different times of life. The report includes four specific focus areas:

  • First Nation, Métis and Inuit health;
  • mental health;
  • built environment; and
  • health equity

Minister Blady noted the report has been written with the intention of engaging Manitobans on the topic of health and wellness and encourages all Manitobans to read it.
