On July 5, 2009 around 8:00 PM Portage la Prairie RCMP responded to a call of a man lying on the shoulder of the highway on Rd 34 N south of Austin, MB.
The man was partially on the roadway and motorists were concerned for his safety. While police were en route, the man became combative with people who stopped to offer assistance. When police arrived on scene, the man became violent towards them, and started to fight with the officers. Police were able to apprehend and arrest the man without injury to themselves or the individual.
During the investigation police discovered the man was in possession of a controlled substance. The accused was returned to the Portage la Prairie RCMP detachment and held in custody to appear in court.
The accused, Martin Wiebe, of Altona, MB has been charged with possession of a controlled substance for the purposes of trafficking, assault, and resist arrest. Wiebe is to appear in court on July 7, 2009.
