On the August 6, 2009, at approximately 7:45pm, RCMP received a call concerning an adult male that was in possession of a shotgun in the RM of Edward, approximately 14 miles west of Melita.

The callers were concerned for their safety because the male in possession of the shotgun had been waving it around and was upset. There were 3 women at the location who took refuge in a nearby trailer and were scared to leave.

RCMP from Virden and Melita initially responded and established a perimeter. As police were setting up this perimeter the women left the location by vehicle safely. Initial attempts to communicate with the individual were unsuccessful.

In order to provide further safety to the police on scene, the Division Emergency Response Team attended.

At 5:30am, the 56-year-old male came out of the residence and surrendered to police. Three firearms were seized from the residence.

At this time no charges have been laid as the investigation is still continuing.
