On August 10, 2009 shortly before 12:30am, RCMP Headingley Traffic Services were dispatched to the Wilkes overpass on the 101 Perimeter highway where a Toyota Highlander was on fire.
RCMP Headingley Traffic Services were dispatched, with the assistance of Winnipeg Police Service, by an off duty RCMP officer who came across the incident.
Early investigation suggest that the driver was northbound on the Perimeter when the vehicle, for reasons that remain to be determined, went off the road into the ditch and struck a lamp post when the vehicle caught fire. Fire officials attended the scene and extinguished the fire.
The lone driver, whose identity remains to be confirmed, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
RCMP Headingley Traffic Services continue to investigate.
