In celebration of its 10th anniversary, the Steinbach and Area Garden Club (SAGC), together with the City of Steinbach, planted a beautiful Silver Maple tree at the K. R. Barkman Park.

“The Steinbach and Area Garden Club has contributed greatly in keeping the hearts and creativity of residents invested in making our community a more beautiful place to live, work, and play,” said Mayor Chris Goertzen. “On behalf of City staff and Council, I want to commend the Garden Club, especially the executive members, for their dedication to the promotion of gardening and the education of gardening topics. Their volunteer work, including their diligent work at the Mennonite Heritage Village, is a great asset to our community.”

SAGC President, Karen Loewen said, “The tree planting today commemorates our 10th anniversary and leaves a legacy for the future. The planting of the Silver Maple tree symbolizes our Club’s commitment to the greening and beautifying of our communities, one tree at a time. Today, the club also begins it’s ‘Trees for Tomorrow’ program – a commitment to planting one tree each year for the next ten years.”

The SAGC was formed by longtime dedicated gardeners, Fred Kaita and Dr. Paul Peters and has since grown to a membership of 150 gardeners. The club’s goal is to promote an interest in horticulture and act as a source of information to club members and the general public. Speakers are regularly invited to talk on various aspects of horticulture, and club members enjoy garden tours and many other gardening related activities.
