When they’re not making Steinbach beautiful, the City’s beautification crew, led by Joyce Purchase, is helping to fill some empty stomachs in Steinbach.
A closer look at the garden bed at Rosewood Place this year will show not a bounty of flowers, but vegetables. All the produce is being donated to Soup’s On, a local soup kitchen that operates out of the downstairs of Grace Mennonite Church.
“We harvested last Tuesday for the first time and I guess it’s a good year for veggies,” said Purchase. “Everything looked awesome.”
The Beautification crew will be harvesting vegetables from the bed every Tuesday for the next few weeks.
“There are some flowers there too,” said Purchase, “but only enough to encourage bee activity. I decided to do this because, while flowers are beautiful, my staff and I wanted to contribute something to the community in a more meaningful way,” said Purchase.
