Starting Monday, September 14,2009, the City’s Waterworks Department will be busy reading water meters in Steinbach. This year, just under 4000 water meters will require readings.

“In the fall of 2007, our department started using wireless reading technology,” said Waterworks Dept. Head, Mike Heppner. “The system allows the meter reader to receive a reading while walking down the sidewalk. This eliminates the need for access to private properties and also reduces reading times. Sites that are having these units installed are primarily difficult to read sites or have hazardous conditions for the meter readers to enter.”

Meter reading is conducted by two Waterworks Department employees and will take 8 to 10 days to complete. These employees can be identified by their safety vests and the City of Steinbach identification cards that they carry.

Meter readings are not invasive, unless the meter is located inside the house, in which case City employees will request entry into the house.

These readings will provide the basis for the quarterly utility bills issued in November.
