The City of Steinbach wants to thank all Steinbach residents for doing their part and recycling throughout 2009. Their diligence in this practice has awarded Steinbach another A+ on its Community Recycling Report issued from Manitoba Product Stewardship Corporation (MPSC).
“Steinbach residents continue to do an exemplary job when it comes to recycling and reducing waste products,” said Mayor Chris Goertzen. “An A+ score is the best rating our city can get and our residents should be commended for their efforts. I look forward to seeing these recycling numbers rise in the coming years as we continue to look at ways in improving our stewardship of the environment around us.”
In the past year, the city of Steinbach recycled a grand total of 1,548,724.0 kilograms. This translates to 140.0 kgs of recycled household material per person. These numbers are slightly down from last year. In 2008, a total of 1,661,037.7 kgs were recycled, equaling 150.1 kgs of recycled material per person last year.
These numbers illustrate the kilograms of household material that are now being made into new and useful products; instead of going to the landfill and taking thousands of years to breakdown.
“Once again, Steinbach residents have shown a keen interest in recycling,” said Eldon Wallman, Sanitation Department Head. “Steinbach is rated as one of an elite group of communities that recycle well above the average rate for Manitoba. Our City recycles two and a half times the Manitoba average per resident and that speaks volumes as to the environmental stewardship within our community. Steinbach residents are making our city a great place to live!”
The City is proud of the community in this regard and encourages residents to keep up the great work.
